Parents and sponsors play an essential role in the faith formation of young people preparing for Confirmation. More than a program requirement, Confirmation is a moment of discernment, growth, and commitment within the life of the Church.
This page is offered to help parents and sponsors understand the purpose of the formation process and how these resources support that journey.
The Sacrament of Confirmation strengthens a baptized person with the gifts of the Holy Spirit and calls them to live as a mature disciple of Jesus Christ. Preparation for Confirmation is not about memorizing facts or completing a checklist, but about helping young people understand their faith, ask honest questions, and recognize God’s presence in their lives.
Authentic formation invites young people to move beyond passive participation toward personal ownership of their Catholic faith.
The lessons and activities on this site are designed to support parish Confirmation programs by providing structured opportunities for prayer, Scripture reflection, discussion, and learning. They are adapted from adult Catholic Foundations and OCIA materials to ensure theological consistency while remaining age-appropriate.
Sessions typically include prayer, Scripture, short videos, guided discussion, and reflection. Students are encouraged to participate actively and to reflect on how faith connects to their everyday experiences.
Parents are the primary educators of their children in the faith. While parish programs provide structure and guidance, the witness of parents—through prayer, participation in the sacraments, and conversation at home—has the greatest impact on a young person’s faith.
Parents are encouraged to:
Ask open-ended questions about what their child is learning
Share their own experiences of faith honestly
Pray with and for their child
Stay connected to parish life
A Confirmation sponsor serves as a companion and witness in faith. Sponsors are not expected to have all the answers, but to model a lived relationship with Christ and the Church.
Sponsors are encouraged to:
Pray regularly for the candidate
Participate in discussions and activities when invited
Share how faith has shaped their own life
Encourage ongoing involvement in the Church beyond Confirmation
Questions and doubts are a normal part of faith development, especially during adolescence. These resources encourage honest reflection and respectful conversation while remaining grounded in the teachings of the Church.
Growth in faith often happens gradually. Parents and sponsors are encouraged to be patient, listen attentively, and trust the work of the Holy Spirit.
These resources are intended to support parish formation efforts and the shared responsibility of parents, sponsors, catechists, and parish leadership in nurturing faith.
